The Catholic Church in Africa: A Growing Force in the Global Church
Africa is one of the fastest-growing regions for the Catholic Church, with millions of new baptisms and an increasing number of priestly vocations. Since 2013, the Catholic population has surged from 185 million to an estimated 230 million by 2025. While vocations are declining in Europe and the Americas, Africa continues to see growth, solidifying its role in the future of the Church.
As Pope Francis remains hospitalized, he was unable to preside over Rome’s traditional Ash Wednesday liturgy. However, his Lenten message was still shared with the faithful. Cardinal Angelo De Donatis read the Pope’s homily, in which the Holy Father emphasized the symbolic meaning of ashes and the call to "return to God with all our hearts." Despite his absence, Pope Francis encouraged the faithful to embark on Lent as a "journey together in hope." EWTN Vatican contributor Valentina Di Donato reports on this special moment.
