The Catholic Church is preparing for the 2025 Jubilee of Hope, a significant spiritual event expected to draw approximately 35 million pilgrims to Rome. The Jubilee will commence with Pope Francis opening the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica on Christmas Eve 2024, followed by the opening of Holy Doors at three other Papal Basilicas.
The Jubilee tradition, reestablished in 1300 by Pope Boniface VIII, traditionally occurs every 25 years. Its biblical roots include the practices of freeing slaves and forgiving debts as expressions of divine mercy. In its Christian context, the Jubilee focuses on the forgiveness of sins and liberation from the punishment due to sin that must be faced in Purgatory.
The event offers plenary indulgences to pilgrims who visit the Holy Doors at Rome's four Papal Basilicas, contingent upon meeting specific spiritual conditions: detachment from sin, prayers for papal intentions, confession, and receiving the Holy Eucharist.
Practical preparations include extensive construction projects throughout Rome, overseen by the Dicastery for Evangelization. The Holy Father has designated 2024 as a Year of Prayer leading to the Jubilee.
In this time of polarization, as noted by Vatican representatives, the Jubilee presents an opportunity to deepen faith and share it with others through prayer and coming together. It serves as a moment for believers to receive mercy and internalize repentance as a desire to start a new life.
As Pope Francis stated in the papal document announcing the jubilee, we must "become singers of hope in a world marked by too much despair."
