What's Next for the Synod on Synodality? Pope Francis Approves 2028 Ecclesial Assembly

The Synod on Synodality continues! Pope Francis has approved a special ecclesial assembly scheduled for October 2028, aimed at evaluating how Catholic communities worldwide have implemented the recommendations of the recently concluded Synod on Synodality. In this video, Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary-General of the Synod of Bishops, explains why this upcoming event is not a new synod but rather the culmination of an extensive, structured, three-year implementation process.

Following the official conclusion of the Synod in October 2024, Pope Francis formally accepted its final document as Church teaching. However, Cardinal Grech emphasizes the ongoing, dynamic nature of the synodal process. Upcoming key events include detailed preparation guidelines in May 2025 and a special "Jubilee of Synodal Teams" in October of the same year.

Throughout 2027, evaluation assemblies will occur at diocesan, national, and international levels, culminating in continental meetings in early 2028. Local synodal teams, consisting of priests, deacons, consecrated religious, and laypeople working closely with their bishops, will play a crucial role in guiding the Church toward greater synodality.
