New Bishop in Oslo: Highlights from Fredrik Hansen’s Episcopal Ordination

January 18, 2025, marked a historic day for Catholics in Norway as Fredrik Hansen was consecrated as bishop, with Cardinal Pietro Parolin serving as the principal celebrant.

The Catholic Church in Norway, a small yet vibrant minority in a predominantly Lutheran country, experienced a day of renewal and unity as Fredrik Hansen received his episcopal ordination. Over 150 priests, numerous bishops, and prominent figures such as Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, participated in celebrating this significant event.

In an interview with EWTN, Cardinal Parolin highlighted the Catholic Church’s active and charitable contributions in Norway, its profound unity with the Pope, and its role as a beacon of hope in Scandinavia. Reflecting on Hansen’s new role, the Cardinal stated: “The holier you become, the more light you will radiate—not your own light, but the supernatural light of Christ’s truth in you.”

Bishop Bernt Eidsvig, who has led the Diocese of Oslo for two decades, pointed to the transformative impact of immigration on the Church in Norway. Under his leadership, the Catholic population has grown from 42,000 to 142,000. Meanwhile, young Catholics like 21-year-old Marie Foss expressed optimism for the future, describing Hansen’s ordination as “an emotional and uplifting experience.”

Bishop Fredrik Hansen reflected on his journey from aspiring to become a Lutheran pastor to embracing the Catholic priesthood and now the episcopate. He emphasized the centrality of prayer and service in his calling: “You will pray for your people and carry their concerns as your own.”
