Exploring the Church of the Pilgrim: Vatican’s Hidden Gem Along the Via Francigena

Discover the fascinating history of the Church of the Pilgrim (Chiesa di San Pellegrino), one of the Vatican's oldest and most historically significant churches! Known since the pontificate of Pope St. Leo III in the late 8th century, this charming church is situated just 200 meters from St. Peter's Basilica, along the renowned Via del Pellegrino, the historical pilgrimage route into Rome.

Learn about its origins dating back to the 8th century, its connection to Saint Peregrine—a 4th-century Roman priest and martyr whose relics were brought here during the coronation of Charlemagne in the year 800—and its role as a resting place for exhausted pilgrims from across Europe.

In this video, we also uncover unique 9th-century frescoes revealed through restoration efforts, and explore the colorful heraldic decorations left by the Pontifical Swiss Guard, who used the chapel until 1977.

What you'll learn:

The ancient history of the church and its connection to Charlemagne

The significance of Via Francigena, the historical pilgrimage route to Rome

Unique frescoes and decorations linked to the Pontifical Swiss Guard

Join us on this journey through centuries of faith, pilgrimage, and history—especially meaningful now during the Jubilee Year of Hope, as millions once again journey to the tomb of Saint Peter.
