800 Years of the Canticle of the Creatures
800 Years of the Canticle of the Creatures
In 1225, a gravely ill St. Francis of Assisi composed the Canticle of the Creatures, a hymn of gratitude celebrating the beauty of creation and humanity’s relationship with God. On January 11, 2025, the Franciscan family gathered in Assisi to honor its 800th anniversary with ceremonies at San Damiano and the Sanctuary of the Spoliation.
The Canticle inspired Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato Si’, reminding us that “nothing in this world is indifferent to us.”
From forgiveness to Brother Sun and Sister Death, the Canticle remains a profound call to care for creation and one another.
