The Pope’s Guardian Angels – The Vatican Gendarmerie

As the Jubilee for the Armed Forces takes place, the Vatican Gendarmerie remains ever vigilant. Known as the Pope’s “guardian angels,” this elite unit of over 150 members plays a crucial role in his security. Though less famous than the Swiss Guard, they work closely with the Pontiff’s personal guard to ensure the safety of the Holy Father.

Security becomes particularly challenging when the Pope travels, as he frequently breaks protocol to be close to the people. Deputy Commander Davide Giulietti explains that protecting “this priest in white,” who is called to be a shepherd to all believers, requires balancing security with his pastoral mission.

From their hidden operations center within the Vatican, the Gendarmerie closely monitors every square meter of the world’s smallest state. They also maintain public order, escort heads of state, and collaborate with Interpol to secure the Pope’s travels.

Watch the video on EWTN Norway for a unique insight into the work of this special police corps as they protect the Pope and maintain order in the world’s smallest state.
