Nordic Catholics Unite in Historic Pilgrimage to Rome for the Jubilee Year 2025 | Vaticano
The Nordic countries—Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland—are often regarded as some of the least religious nations in the world. Yet, they have deep Catholic roots, and despite the Church being a small minority today, shaped by migration, it bears witness to a vibrant faith. For the first time, the five Nordic Catholic communities have come together for a joint pilgrimage to Rome in celebration of the Jubilee Year 2025.
Over the course of three days, more than 1,000 pilgrims visited Rome’s sacred sites, prayed together, and reflected on their shared faith. They celebrated Mass in the Pope’s basilicas and passed through the Holy Doors as one community. Many expressed their joy in experiencing unity and belonging, especially those from small, scattered parishes in Northern Europe.
The pilgrimage culminated in a private audience with Pope Francis and a solemn Mass at the high altar of St. Peter’s Basilica. For Nordic Catholics, this has been a profound experience of the Church as one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.
