Bishop Álvarez – First Interview Since Exile from Nicaragua

Pope Francis expressed deep concern for Bishop Rolando Álvarez and condemned the persecution of the Church in Nicaragua when the bishop was sentenced to 26 years in prison after refusing exile. Accused of treason and spreading false news, he became known for his defense of human rights and religious freedom. Catholic institutions in Nicaragua have faced severe repression, including the seizure of monasteries and seminaries.

In January 2024, Bishop Álvarez and 18 other Church representatives were sent to Rome. One year later, in an exclusive interview with EWTN News, he testifies to how faith and the power of prayer sustained him during his imprisonment and how he now finds strength in the Church. He states that he does not feel exiled but liberated, and that his hope and faith have only grown stronger.

Watch the moving interview with Bishop Álvarez on EWTN Norway, where he shares his story of faith, suffering, and hope.
