Hebreerbrevet säger om vår Herre: ”Du är för evigt präst.” I dagens avsnitt tar författaren hjälp av en gåtfull gestalt i Gamla Testamentet som Abraham mötte vid ett tillfälle, Mel­kisedek. Han var ”kung i Salem och präst åt Gud”. Åt denne Melkisedek ger Ab­­ra­ham tionde och tar emot hans välsignelse.

Vad är skillnaden mellan ett kristet samhälle och ett hedniskt samhälle?

På tredje söndagen under året läser vi också profeten Nehemja, som skriver: ”Prästen Esra bar fram lagboken inför hela församlingen av män och kvinnor och alla som var mogna att lyssna. – de läste ur den tolkade den och utlade den så att folket förstod vad som lästes” (8:2). Ett kristet samhälle bygger alltid på ”lagboken” som Gud ingjutit i sitt folk. När den inte längre läses och utläggs för folket är de inte längre det troende folket som håller livet som heligt från dess allra första början till det naturliga slutet. Hur ser ett sådan samhälle ut som inte vilar på Guds lag? det har blivit ett icke kristet folk och samhället har då blivit hedniskt – som det en gång var!

Hebreerbrevet är skrivet till dem som är på väg att förlora hop­pet. De får en ”stark uppmuntran”. De påminns om Guds löfte till Ab­ra­ham. Löftet förstärks dessutom av en ed. Genom ”två orubb­­li­ga utfästelser” ville han visa hur fast hans löfte till Abraham var, att han verkligen ville välsigna honom och göra hans ätt talrik. De resignerade tankarna kan hota och skrämma, men egen­t­ligen saknar de kraft.

In 1225, a gravely ill St. Francis of Assisi composed the Canticle of the Creatures, a hymn of gratitude celebrating the beauty of creation and humanity’s relationship with God. On January 11, 2025, the Franciscan family gathered in Assisi to honor its 800th anniversary with ceremonies at San Damiano and the Sanctuary of the Spoliation.

The Canticle inspired Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato Si’, reminding us that “nothing in this world is indifferent to us.”
