Holy Mass for Pope Benedict XVI in Rome

On the morning of December 31st, Cardinal Kurt Koch celebrated a solemn pontifical Mass at the tomb of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, marking the second anniversary of his passing. The Bavarian pope, who died on December 31, 2022, rests just meters from Saint Peter’s tomb in the Vatican grottos.

In his heartfelt homily, Cardinal Koch reflected on Pope Benedict’s enduring theological legacy and his mission to re-center the world’s focus on God, truth, and beauty:

"For a time when people think of God as a stranger and are too deaf to listen, Benedict reminded us of the urgent need to think about God."

Pope Benedict XVI, who served as pope from 2005 to 2013, was known for his deep theological insights, his role in the Second Vatican Council, and his historic resignation—the first in nearly six centuries.
